How do I apply for a study place?
Application for the first semester of a study program at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA) is done online only. The application procedure for non-selective bachelor’s programs differs from that for degree programs with restriction on admission. Please use the links below for information on both procedures, dates, and for the list of degree programs for which you can currently apply. In addition, you can directly access the applicant portal if you do not need the instructions.

Admission-restricted degree programs, 1st semester
The application deadline for the summer semester 2026 was January 15th, 2026. Application will be possible again for the winter semester 2026/27 entry. You will be able to apply for the following degree programs with restriction on admission starting by May 2026:
Application by lottery
The application deadline for the summer semester 2026 is closed. However, there are still study places available for the following admission-restricted degree programs, for which you can apply via the lottery system until March 16th, 2026:
- Automotive Engineering
- Electrical Engineering & Information Technology
- International IT Business
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics
Applications can only be submitted via the lottery application. Please send the completed lottery application with the required documents to Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. Once we have received your documents, you will receive an email from us informing you about the next steps.
Please note that lectures at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences begin on March 16th, 2026. We therefore recommend that you apply in good time before the start of your studies, also so that you can take part in the preparatory courses, which begin at the end of February.
Lateral entry
The applicant portal will be open for applications into a higher semester for the summer semester 2026 between November 3rd, 2025, and March 30th, 2026.
These applications are made directly on the HKA applicant portal (no registration via Hochschulstart necessary). The documents are uploaded online only, paper hardcopy is not required.

Second degree studies
Application for a second degree program follows the above application steps for the first semester in a non-selective or admission-restricted degree program. In addition, we require the Bachelor's degree certificate from your first degree program and a letter of motivation explaining why you are interested in the second program.
