Information for foreign applicants

Applicants from non-EU countries

Are you an applicant from a country that is not a member of the European Union? In this case, you must have the higher education entrance qualification obtained in your home country recognized by the Center for International Students (Ausländerstudienkolleg) ASK Konstanz . The Ausländerstudienkolleg also checks if you need to take a preparatory course and assessment test, or a language test.

Proof of German language proficiency

Foreign applicants usually opt for one of the following exams to prove sufficient German language proficiency:

  • TestDaF (with an average of at least TDN 4 over all four parts of the exam)
  • German language test for the admission to universities - DSH (DSH2 or DSH3)
  • Telc C1 University
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (Goethe-Institut)
  • Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (Goethe-Institut)

Other certificates by Goethe-Institut are not accepted.

The legal basis is § 60 LHG in conjunction with the Framework Regulation on German Language Examinations for Studies at German Universities and the Administrative Regulation of the Ministry of Science on the Equivalence of Foreign Educational Certificates.
Further information and forms can be found on the homepage of ASK Konstanz.

Regulations for Mongolian and Chinese applicants

As a Mongolian or Chinese applicant, you must also submit to the ASK Konstanz the certificate (APS) of the Academic Review Board at the German Embassy (Embassy Beijing) on academic achievements (not required for Master's programs).

International applicants with German university entrance qualification

You are applying for a degree program as a non-EU national but have obtained

  • the higher education entrance qualification in the Federal Republic of Germany or
  • a higher education entrance qualification by graduating from a German school abroad.

This means that you will be treated like Germans in the admission procedure (so-called "Bildungsinländer").

Applicants from EU countries

Proof of German language proficiency

Applicants holding a university entrance qualification obtained in an EU country usually opt for one of the following exams to prove sufficient German language proficiency:

Information for Germans with a non-EU university entrance qualification

You are a German citizen and have obtained a higher education entrance qualification abroad? In this case, you need to have the certificate recognized by the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart.
The certificate of recognition must be submitted to the University by the application deadline.

Information for master craftsmen and journeymen

Applicants who have successfully completed the master craftsman's examination or equivalent vocational training in their profession or a technical school as defined in Section 14 of the Education Act for Baden-Württemberg, and who show that they took part in an advisory interview at a university, thereby are also qualified to take up studies.

Journeymen who have completed two years of vocational training or three years of work experience in a subject-related profession are also qualified to take up studies. For this, you need written proof that you were counseled by the professor in charge of the relevant study program. In addition, you must successfully pass an aptitude test for vocationally qualified persons at Konstanz University of Applied Sciences or a comparable test. Please contact us, the University will then register to this test all students concerned.

Mr Harlacher is the person to contact at HKA.

The test at Hochschule Konstanz takes place once a year.

The grade of the higher education entrance qualification is calculated from the master craftsman’s examination or aptitude test, from which the individual grades for the weighted ranking can also be taken. The date of the higher education entrance qualification is taken from this certificate. For counseling, please contact the professors who are responsible for this in the individual degree programs.
