Getting a scholarship

How about a scholarship? The advantages are obvious: great support (financial and otherwise), no obligation for repayment, and building a network. There are now more than 2,000 scholarship providers in Germany that support students during the course or part of their studies. Also, the University has own scholarship programs to fund students.
In the following we have compiled an overview of the major scholarship providers in Germany. In addition, we are happy to offer you an individual consultation on scholarships, to discuss together which scholarships are suitable for you and what to expect for application.

The 13 national sponsorship organizations

Most scholarships are awarded through the national sponsorship organizations, which provide both monetary and non-material support for their scholarship holders. The aim is to support gifted students, who are expected to excel in their studies and careers, to develop their potential. Therefore, good grades and commitment are generally basic requirements - however, a grade with 1 before the decimal point is not always required.

Financial support is handled in the same way by all funding organizations: If you are eligible to receive BAföG, you can receive the maximum funding rate to which you are entitled under BAföG, depending on your financial background. Regardless of income, all scholarship holders receive a scholarship allowance of 300 euros per month.

The following should be noted regarding the 13 large national sponsorship organizations:

When applying, you should choose the foundation that best suits your own personality. Therefore, it is important get informed thoroughly about the individual foundations.
It is also important to edit the application carefully so as not to be eliminated from the process due to formal errors. The University can support you in preparing your application documents.
Some foundations require letters of recommendation and/or peer reviews for application, e.g. from the university's faculty.
It often helps to take a closer look at the foundation’s program and goals to prepare for a post-application selection interview or assessment.
The application should be submitted no later than four semesters before the end of the study program, i.e. in the case of a master's program, depending on the standard period of study, no later than the end of the first semester, but preferably before the start of the program. Some foundations do not support three-semester programs.
Many foundations have annual or semi-annual application deadlines.
In many cases, there is an age limit; students should not be older than 32 when they begin studying.
Under certain conditions, funding is also available for foreign students, particularly for consecutive master's studies in Germany or for doctoral studies.
All foundations also offer scholarships for refugees, provided they have admission to a German university.
No need to give up immediately after getting rejected. Most foundations allow you to reapply provided that you meet the application requirements.

Religion-related sponsorships

Avicienna-Studienwerk e.V.

The Avicenna-Studienwerk supports highly talented and socially engaged Muslim students by awarding scholarships. Non-Muslims who are particularly committed to dialogue can also be sponsored.

Cusanuswerk – Episcopal scholarship program

The Cusanuswerk is the funding organization of the Catholic Church and supports talented Catholic students of all subjects. You can be nominated for the selection procedure, or apply yourself.

Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk (ELES)

ELES supports exceptionally talented Jewish students and expects commitment and a sense of responsibility from its scholarship holders. Application is possible by nomination or initiative.

Evangelisches Studienwerk e.V. Villigst

The Evangelical Church's scholarship program for gifted students supports students of all subject areas and includes numerous, individual seminars. One of the prerequisites for application is, among other things, social commitment.

Friedrich Ebert Foundation

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation , which is associated with the SPD (Social Democratic Party), supports students who, in addition to good grades, can demonstrate social commitment in the spirit of social democracy. German and foreign students can apply at any time, but no later than the third semester.

Friedrich Naumann Foundation

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom support individuals with academic talent in all subjects who actively stand up for liberal values and an open society and take responsibility for others.

Hanns Seidel Foundation

The Hanns Seidel Foundation , which is associated with the political party CSU, focuses on a Christian-social understanding of values. In addition to academic achievement and personal qualities, social commitment is therefore an important prerequisite for application.

Heinrich Böll Foundation

The Green-affiliated Heinrich Böll Foundation expects its scholarship holders not only to perform well, but also to engage with the foundation's core values such as ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self-determination and justice.

Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS)

The CDU-affiliated KAS supports high-achieving students who are socially or politically engaged and identify with Christian values. Scholarship holders are expected to actively participate in idealistic promotion.

Rosa Luxemburg Foundation

The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is affiliated to the party "Die Linke". Important values for the foundation are democracy, solidarity, and compensating disadvantages. Women, the disadvantaged, and people with a migration background are given priority in case of equal performance.

Förderwerke ohne politisch-konfessionelle Bindung

Hans-Böckler-Stiftung

Das Studienförderwerk des Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbundes bietet mehrere Bewerbungsverfahren an: auf Vorschlag der Stipendiatengruppen, der Gewerkschaften oder die Selbstbewerbung über die „Böckler-Aktion Bildung“. Es wird gewerkschaftliches oder gesellschaftspolitisches Engagement erwartet.

Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft

Mit „Wir stiften Chancen“ fördert die Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft Eigeninitiative, Unternehmergeist, Engagement und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung. Bei einer Bewerbung ist nicht allein die Noten entscheidend, sondern das Gesamtpaket aus Ideen, Engagement und Persönlichkeit.

Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes

Die Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes ist das größte und älteste Begabtenförderwerk. Konnten Schüler und Studierende in früheren Jahren nur von Schulleitern und Dozenten für ein Stipendium vorgeschlagen werden, ist inzwischen auch eine Online-Selbstbewerbung im ersten Semester möglich.

Stipendienprogramme an der Hochschule Karlsruhe

Deutschlandstipendium

Die Hochschule Karlsruhe beteiligt sich am Deutschlandstipendium. Es richtet sich an begabte und leistungsstarke Studierende, aber auch persönliche Umstände und Engagement werden bei der Vergabe berücksichtigt. Der finanzielle Hintergrund spielt keine Rolle. Das Stipendium unterstützt Sie mit monatlich 300 Euro für in der Regel zwei Semester, Wiederbewerbung möglich.

Kooperationsstipendium

Mit den Kooperationsstipendien verfügt die Hochschule Karlsruhe über eigene Stipendienprogramme, um ihre Studierenden zu fördern. Diese von privaten Partnern finanzierten Stipendien werden von der Hochschule in verschiedenen Studienrichtungen und Studienabschnitten vergeben. Beim Kooperationsstipendium bewerben Sie sich zielgerichtet um einen privaten Förderer. Dieser Förderer ist auch an der Auswahl der Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten beteiligt.

Sissi Closs Stipendium Faire Chance

Frau Prof. Dipl.-Inf. Sissi Closs setzt sich seit vielen Jahren für Gleichstellung und Chancengleichheit an der Hochschule Karlsruhe ein und hat mit dem Sissi Closs Stipendium Faire Chance ein Stipendium ins Leben gerufen, welches Studierende mit Familie bei der Vereinbarkeit von Studium und Elternschaft unterstützt.
Jede ausgewählte Person erhält 1.020 Euro/Jahr (85 € /mtl.).

Das Aufstiegsstipendium für Berufserfahrene

Das Aufstiegsstipendium soll es engagierten Fachkräften mit Berufsausbildung und Praxiserfahrung (min. 2 Jahre) finanziell ermöglichen, ein Studium an einer Hochschule zu beginnen. Mit dem Aufstiegsstipendium wird ein Erststudium in Vollzeit oder berufsbegleitend an einer staatlichen oder staatlich anerkannten Hochschule gefördert. Für Studierende im Vollzeitstudium beträgt das Stipendium monatlich 861 Euro (Stand 12/2020). Zusätzlich wird eine Betreuungspauschale für Kinder gewährt. Die Förderung erfolgt einkommensunabhängig und für die gesamte Dauer des Studiums. Studierende in einem berufsbegleitenden Studiengang erhalten jährlich 2.400 Euro.

Das Karriereportal e-fellows.net bringt leistungsstarke Studierende mit Unternehmen zusammen. Es handelt sich nicht um ein klassisches Stipendium mit monatlichen Geldbetrag. Stattdessen sind es vor allem ideelle Leistungen sowie geldwerte Vorteile, die ein Stipendium von e-fellows attraktiv machen.
