Recognizing & transferring credits

Transfer to HKA

In order to apply for admission to a higher semester

  • you have to submit exam results and proof of study periods that can be recognized,
  • a free study place must be available for the semester you wish to join,
  • there must be no obstacle to admission (e.g. loss of right to sit an examination in a previous degree program at the same type of higher education institution),
  • proof of creditable competences acquired outside of higher education can be submitted.

Upon receiving the notification of admission you must apply to the Board of Examiners responsible for your degree program if you intend to transfer specific examination credits or non-academic achievements. Please observe the following information and use the corresponding forms.

Recognition of study and examination credits

Please take the following steps in order to have credits transferred:

  • Contact the responsible person at the Faculty / study program (Head of the Board of Examiners or Faculty Advisors) to find out which achievements are generally eligible for recognition.
  • Please submit the application for recognition to the office of the Faculty/program using the form available here after receiving the admission but at the latest within 4 weeks after the start of lectures of the semester for which the study and examination credits are to be recognized. The documents submitted should be as informative and comprehensive as possible. As a rule, module descriptions in particular are informative. If no module descriptions are available, alternative documents such as lecture notes, teaching/learning materials, exercise sheets, examination papers, or similar may be submitted.
  • The Faculty/program will check whether there are substantial differences between the skills required by HKA and the skills acquired at another higher education institution. The credits will be recognized unless substantial differences appear. You will be notified of the result of the recognition procedure.

If substantial differences exist and the achievements or parts of the achievements cannot be recognized you will be notified in writing.

Please note:

  • Legally binding recognition is only possible after you enrolled at HKA. However, the first steps towards recognition can be taken before.
  • Recognition of previous examination results should not be confused with placement in a specific semester. In the case of placement, the previous study periods are taken into account in addition to the course and examination credits. For example, if you are placed in the third semester of a degree program you may still be missing individual credits from the first and/or second semester.

Crediting of competencies acquired outside of higher education

Please take the following steps in order to have competencies acquired outside of higher education transferred:

  • Contact the responsible person at the Faculty / study program (Head of the Board of Examiners or Faculty Advisors) to find out which achievements are generally eligible for transfer of credit. 
  • Please submit the application for transfer of credit to the office of the Faculty/program using the form available here after receiving the admission but at the latest within 4 weeks after the start of lectures of the semester for which the credits are to be recognized. The documents submitted should be as informative and comprehensive as possible. 
  • The Faculty / study program will check whether the competencies acquired outside of higher education are essentially the same in content and level as the competencies to be acquired at HKA. If this is the case, the competencies will be credited. You will be notified of the result of the transfer of credit procedur.

If substantial differences exist and the achievements or parts of the achievements cannot be transferred you will be notified in writing.
