2nd International Workshop on AI for Virtualized Application Infrastructure and Cloud Platform Security (AVACS 2024)

The AVACS 2024 workshop, led by DSS (among others), in conjunction with the IEEE ISCC 2024 on June 26-29 in Paris, France, will address AI/ML methods for security and risk management of virtualized infrastructures and application systems, as well as new security risks and protection methods that relate to AI/ML methods themselves.

Venue

AVACS 2024 will be co-located with the 29th IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC), June 26-29 2024, Paris, France.

Important Dates

  • Extended Submission Deadline for Workshop Papers: May 11, 2024
  • Workshop Paper Notification: May 13, 2024
  • Registration Deadline of Workshop Authors: May 15, 2024
  • Workshop Event: June 26, 2024

Overview & Topics

In recent decades, cloud/fog computing has enabled the rapid proliferation of large-scale, often mission-critical IT applications with mobile, web-based and cyber-physical application systems. Cloud, fog and other virtualized computing infrastructures have minimized the upfront investment while promising high availability, scalability, and elasticity on demand, as well as high levels of performance, fault tolerance, and security.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques can help DevOps and SecOps teams to build and run cloud/fog services and the underlying application systems in a highly secure and efficient manner. On the one hand, They can gain an accurate and comprehensive understanding of security incidents along the entire system technology stack and proactively initiate appropriate countermeasures. On the other hand, AI/ML techniques introduce new threats by themselves including potential privacy breaches, data manipulation, and the amplification of cyber attacks due to vulnerabilities in AI algorithms and the increased attack surface of cloud-based systems.

The workshop will focus on the general applicability and integration of AI/ML methods in the area of security and risk management in the context of modern virtualized infrastructures and application systems. In addition, it will focus on the security of AI/ML-based systems in widely distributed and cloud-based environments and raise awareness of new threats. Our aim is to facilitate the exchange and evolution of relevant innovative ideas and to encourage participation of researchers both from academia and industry. AVACS 2024 is the 2nd edition of the workshop, that started 2022 in the scope of the ESOCC conference.

AVACS encourages a transdisciplinary perspective and welcomes papers on topics that include, but are not limited to the following:

  • AI-based methods for web application and cloud platform security
    • Approaches & applications utilizing federated ML
    • Detection and mitigation of network attacks
    • AI methods for generating simulations of network attacks
    • AI for protocol analysis and verification
    • AI methods for design and code analysis
    • Governance of AI-based management methods
    • AI-based automated (penetration) testing
    • AI methods for secure user authentication and authorization
  • Security of AI-based systems
    • Data breaches and privacy violations by AI-based systems

    • Other scenarios and use cases
    • Related research projects and initiatives

Submission & Participation

The workshop is open to contributions that focus on a broad spectrum of AI-based applications for management and especially securing of virtualized infrastructures and cloud-based systems while also considering new threats of those approaches. Papers should explain and exemplify relevant issues and open problems, present established solutions, and/or discuss success stories.

Submitted papers must be no more than six (6) pages long including bibliography references and need to follow IEEE proceedings guidelines. IEEE provides respective templates for conference proceedings as well as tooling for checking latex-based mauscripts.

Submissions should be uploaded to the EDAS conference management system until the submission deadline. Each submission will be reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. One author per accepted paper needs to participate in the workshop event and register for it on the ISCC webpage. Improved versions of presented papers will be published in the post-workshop proceedings by IEEE.
