Transportation Management

Profile

Overview

Mobility is ubiquitous in our lives and essential for social life. It opens up opportunities for activities in other places. What we need to achieve is that people can get to those places in such a way that we can still enjoy them – this is the aim of Transportation Management.

A limited supply of roads, railroads, tracks in the face of an increasing demand for transport – something doesn't add up: Cities are literally bursting at the seams. It is time-consuming, expensive and, in cities, often impossible to build new transport infrastructure. Mobility must regain its quality, be sustainable, efficient and effective. What is needed is an integrated view of mobility as an overall system with the central aspects of people, means of transport, structural-technical infrastructure, digital equipment, and a culture of mobility.

Who is the program aimed at?

Do you want to actively help master both short-term and long-term challenges of sustainable development? Do you enjoy developing new ideas or finding creative solutions for sustainable mobility and transport of the future? If so, and if you also enjoy designing concepts and strategies for a wide variety of transportation modes, using approaches from computer science or transportation psychology, and like to find compromises, then this is the degree program for you!

Due to the local need for livable cities or the global climate crisis, your future job will increase in importance in the coming years. Together, we want to accompany and help shape the change in the field of mobility and transport – towards sustainable mobility as an essential building block for maintaining and expanding the quality of life in cities and rural areas. Due to a broad professional education, which includes planning and technical skills as well as communicative competencies, many different occupations are open to you after graduation. In principle, you should have an interest in technology and mobility. Good grades in mathematics, German, and English are required for a successful application, as these are given special consideration in the admission process.

A student reports

I was already very interested in mobility issues of all kinds during my training period at a transport company. In the Transportation Management program, I acquired knowledge and skills that led me to the Institute of Transport Systems and Infrastructure for some research projects on mobility management and transportation ecology. After my time at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, I joined an engineering office for transportation where I actively help shaping the future of environmentally friendly mobility in cities and communities in southern Germany by means of noise action plans and mobility concepts.
