ResiliNet - Strategic Design Options for Resilient and Adaptive Value and Supply Networks

Objective

The objective and innovative claim is to identify new strategic options for action for and with medium-sized industrial companies in Baden-Württemberg for the design of resilient and adaptable value creation networks and to assess them in a well-founded manner with regard to their potential and limitations. On this basis, a structured catalog of options will be developed that sorts the selected options for action and describes for which companies they are promising or not under which conditions. This is because small and medium-sized industrial companies find it difficult to perceive the multitude and complexity of different options for designing their value networks and to select and assess the options that are suitable for their particular situation and starting conditions. The options catalog is therefore intended to suggest a selection of innovative design options for the industrial companies concerned that appear suitable for their initial situation, depending on a number of decision-relevant characteristics (e.g. their position in the value chain, upstream and market-side international positioning, depth of value added, product complexity, type of manufacturing or technical competence in the use of advanced production technologies).

Procedure

The two research partners first derive suitable options for action for the strategic design of resilient and adaptable value networks on the basis of existing business management concepts of International Management, Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing and Innovation Management. By means of workshops at three interested industrial companies, these options for action are supplemented with the perspective of Baden-Württemberg's SMEs. The processed findings are then adapted and validated in two iterative loops with the companies. The first iteration serves to develop applicable options for action for the strategic design of resilient and adaptive value networks as well as the validation of the design options by means of renewed workshops or individual discussions with representatives of the three industrial companies. The second iteration serves to develop generalizable levers for the strategic design of resilient and adaptive value networks as well as the integration of the levers into a modular option catalog for the strategic Planning and Design of adaptive value networks.
