From June 17-21, 2024, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Information Technology at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA) and its network partners hosted the "Hydrogen Week" as a hybrid event. Numerous interested parties attended the event on the premises of the Karlsruhe Chamber of Industry and Commerce and in the livestream on the Faculty's YouTube channel.
The Hydrogen Week at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences was dedicated to the influence of H2 as an energy source for a successful and efficient transition from a fossil-dominated to a climate-neutral society. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and its network partners had put together a comprehensive program focusing on various key aspects, and the Karlsruhe Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) made its premises available. Ilja Lifschiz, Energy Officer at the IHK Karlsruhe, commented: "The IHK was happy to host this Hydrogen Week in order to bring together experts from politics, science and industry from the region."
The presentations were also streamed on YouTube, with well over 3,000 interested people following the experts' talks. Karsten Pinkwart, Professor at HKA and Fraunhofer ICT, sums up the success of the Karlsruhe Hydrogen Week: "A location like Karlsruhe and the surrounding area is ideal for a sustainable energy future; hydrogen research and development have a strong academic and industrial basis here."
Jochen Ehlgötz, Managing Director of TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe GmbH, adds: "The presentations at the Hydrogen Week in Karlsruhe showed that the development of a hydrogen infrastructure is essential for the future viability of the economy in our Technology Region. Even if many parameters are still unclear at the moment, we must set out together today and create the right environment for this." Wolfgang Köppel from the DVGW Research Center also confirms this: "Connecting Baden-Württemberg to the hydrogen core network by the early 2030s is essential for the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy and for supplying industry and gas-fired power plants. In addition, gas distribution networks are also needed for regional supply."
Many innovators have recognized the importance of H2 for the climate transition, and more and more young start-ups are focusing on hydrogen. Hilmar F. John, Managing Director of fokus.energie e. V., commented: "Hydrogen is one of the energy sources that will make an important contribution to the energy, heating and mobility transition. The presenting start-ups showed their innovative solutions for future applications".
