First graduates of the German-Taiwanese double degree Master's program. And it’s just the beginning!

The two-year DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) project “German-Taiwanese Double Degree in Master Data Science in Business Information Systems” has been successfully completed. The follow-up project started in summer 2024.

The Faculty of Computer Science & Business Information Systems is proud to announce the successful completion of a two-year DAAD-funded project aimed at expanding and promoting the German-Taiwanese double degree Master’s programs in Computer Science and Business Information Systems in collaboration with National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST/TaiwanTech). Concluded in August 2024, the project represents a significant step forward in fostering international higher education collaboration.

The project was led by Professor Dr. Andrea Wirth from the Faculty of Computer Science & Business Information Systems.  In the first phase, the cooperation agreement was advanced by Prof. Dr. Wirth during her continuing education semester and signed in February 2023. To facilitate this, Prof. Wirth spent several weeks in Taipei in November 2022, where she successfully sparked interest in the double degree program among Taiwanese students through her 3-week compact course, “Goal and Indicator-Oriented Management”.

In the winter semester of 2023/24, the first group of HKA students arrived in Taipei, while the first students from TaiwanTech were welcomed at HKA. This first cohort has successfully completed their study semesters, and some participants have already submitted their Master's theses.

By completing a study semester at TaiwanTech in Taipei and submitting a jointly recognized Master's thesis, students at the Faculty of Computer Science & Business Information Systems earn two degrees: a Master’s in Computer Science or a Master’s in Business Information Systems from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA), and a Master’s in Information Management from TaiwanTech.

In March 2024, Andrea Wirth visited the HKA students in Taipei, accompanied by three other faculty members: Prof. Dr. Uwe Haneke, Prof. Dr. Jannik Strötgen, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Wölfel. Together, they explored additional opportunities for collaboration and research. In April 2024, a Taiwanese delegation visited HKA to further strengthen this partnership.

Another achievement of the project is the approval of a new DAAD follow-up initiative valued at approximately €210,000, designated to support two student cohorts (2024 and 2025) over the next two years. This project will start in the current winter semester of 2024/25, offering additional scholarships for HKA students and travel funds to enhance collaborative opportunities with TaiwanTech.

Prof. Dr. Wirth expressed her enthusiasm: “I am particularly committed to supporting our students with scholarships, enabling them to broaden their horizons and fully experience globalization. The double degree program with Taiwan has been very well received by students at both universities. The second cohort is currently completing their courses in Taipei, and HKA has welcomed another five students from TaiwanTech for the winter semester of 2024/25.”
