Interview with Gregor Grambow

Gegor Grambow, Master's graduate in Computer Science in the 2008 batch, today professor at Aalen University of Applied Sciences

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think back to Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences?

The first thing that comes to mind is the good ambiance at the Faculty of Computer Science and Business Information Systems. The professors always had a lot of time for us and we were given very friendly and personal attention. I was also interested in and enjoyed that we had the opportunity to participate in current research in addition to the strong practical relevance of the program.

Why did you decide on this degree program?

I had been accepted by a number of universities for a Master's program in Computer Science, and I chose Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences because it had the best results in rankings and other sources.

On which subject did you focus on for your studies?

My focus was on data and information processing with enterprise frameworks. This choice later paid off for me, as the successors of such frameworks later played a significant role in the emerging Big Data boom and are highly relevant for the future.

How did you fare after graduation?

After graduation, I was able to work at a Steinbeis Technology Transfer Center associated with the Faculty. There I was able to work on projects for several larger companies in the Karlsruhe technology region, gaining valuable experience in various areas such as the life science industry and the banking sector.

How did you achieve your current position?

During my studies, I developed an interest for research and development in the field of modern data technologies. Via my work at the Steinbeis Technology Transfer Center, I got the opportunity to work in a research project and do a PhD. After receiving my PhD in 2016 at the University of Ulm, I took on teaching positions to prepare for a professorship and gain experience. At Aachen University of Applied Sciences, I was a substitute professor from 2018 and was appointed professor in 2020.

What are your current tasks as a professor?

Essentially, of course, teaching, which includes lectures, labs and supervising student work. However, there are many other tasks, for example in the self-administration of the faculty or in the course of research projects and industry cooperations.

What in particular do you enjoy about your work?

The work is very varied and interesting. There are always new topics for lectures or theses. Being at the intersection of teaching and research, the job is very exciting. This includes trying out and expanding new technologies together with students, coming up with new concepts, presenting results at conferences, implementing new ideas in research projects, and much more.

What would you like to share with students or prospective students?

Contact your lecturers if you have any ideas, questions or suggestions! People at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences always were open to being approached by us. This is how interesting new opportunities can arise that help you get ahead. And take advantage of all the opportunities offered at the university to find out and get to know your own personal, communicative, methodological and social competencies better, in addition to your professional competencies, so that you can make good decisions for your career.
