Solar-powered wastewater treatment and reuse for hospitals in Uganda
Hospital wastewater is particularly problematic, as it is significantly more contaminated with pharmaceutical residues than municipal wastewater. This is a particular problem in African countries, where a lot of wastewater is discharged untreated into the environment or is inadequately treated in the central municipal wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, the aim of this project is to develop a robust and cost-effective technology that enables decentralised treatment of hospital wastewater with a high share of renewable energy. For this purpose, a combination of a membrane bioreactor with an activated carbon treatment is to be used, which is to be operated to a high degree by means of solar photovoltaic energy.
