HKA Rector sends a strong signal for universities of applied sciences at EU workshop in Paris

On 5 May 2025, Prof. Dr Rose Marie Beck, Rector of Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA), was a panellist at the ‘Choose Europe for Science, Choose Alliances’ workshop at the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research in Paris. In the presence of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron, representatives of European university alliances discussed the future of European scientific cooperation.

Prof. Beck was the only representative of a university of applied sciences (UAS) on the panel on the attractiveness of European higher education. In her contributions, she emphasised the crucial role of UASs in the European Higher Education Area - especially in the training of practical, innovative specialists. Together with partners from the INGENIUM alliance, of which HKA is a member, it is actively shaping the future of the European Higher Education Area.

“With Choose Europe for Science, the EU is focussing on the contribution of science to competitiveness. This lies in the fact that it covers the entire chain from basic research to application in companies in a lean and effective way. I very much welcome the fact that this is also reflected in the European funding and financing strategy. With their proximity to industry, universities of applied sciences can make an indispensable contribution to this through practical teaching and applied research. I believe that some players in the European scientific landscape have recognised this potential - now it is up to us to make use of these strengths.”  Prof. Dr. Rose Marie Beck, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences

President Emmanuel Macron emphasised in his speech: ‘There is no democracy without free and recognised science.’
Ursula von der Leyen added: ‘Europe is choosing to make science a core value.’ New programmes such as the Magnet for Researchers are designed to attract talent to Europe.

With its work within the framework of INGENIUM, the HKA sees itself as part of this European movement - and as a voice for the diversity of European university types.
