The “Successful Start” program, which Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has been offering since the 2010–11 winter semester, is funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg. New students have the opportunity to choose the option that best suits their start of studies from among three tiered models.
What is the goal of the program?
The program takes into account the individual circumstances and prior knowledge of new students. Study models tailored to these factors are being tested, allowing for different paces of study and thus offering first-year students, in particular, an optimal start to their academic careers and, ultimately, to their future professional lives.
Who decides at which level students begin?
The decision on which of the three levels to begin at rests with the student. In addition to starting their studies directly (Level 1), participation in the bridge courses before the start of the academic year (Level 2) is, in principle, open to all students. To split the first semester (Level 3), students must take a placement test . Entry into Level 3 is currently offered in five bachelor’s degree programs. Recommendations are made based on the test results. However, students are free to decide whether or not to follow these recommendations.
Level 1 - Direct Admission to the Program
Who is direct admission recommended for?
All students who achieve good to very good results on the placement test are advised to begin their studies immediately and attend regular courses.
What is the goal of direct admission?
Students with strong entrance qualifications are able to complete their studies quickly.
Level 2 - Transition to College with Bridge Courses
Who is the program for students starting their studies with bridge courses intended for?
Students who want to refresh their high school knowledge of math, physics, or programming before starting their studies or fill in gaps in their knowledge. The Bridge courses take place immediately before the start of the academic program and provide the fundamental knowledge in mathematics, physics, study skills, and programming necessary for university studies.

Level 3 - Starting Your Studies with a Split First Semester
Who is the split-semester program suitable for?
Entry via Level 3 is suitable for first-year students who received relatively little instruction in mathematics and science subjects in high school or who have had a significant gap between graduating from high school and beginning their studies. A placement test administered at the start of the program assesses your current level of knowledge. A recommendation is made based on the results. Participation in the test and enrollment in Level 3 are voluntary, but are strongly recommended and supported by the relevant mathematics professors.
What are the goals of structuring the first semester in this way?
- To use the time gained to provide students with subject-specific support in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through additional courses and tutorials
- Individual support and regular performance feedback
- Concurrent optimization of learning behaviors through courses on study skills
- Reducing exam and academic pressure and providing additional time for studying and reviewing
- Reducing the risk of dropping out
Program Details and Participating Degree Programs
Currently, five bachelor’s degree programs offer a new entry point into the third cycle. Participation in this program splits the first semester into two semesters. This results in an extension of the standard period of study by one semester. At the same time, any existing eligibility for BAföG financial aid is also extended. Additional courses are offered to help students prepare for exams. Attendance is mandatory for these courses, but they do not result in any additional exam requirements. The course schedule is mandatory for all Level 3 students; no other combination of courses is permitted. The exams to be taken are aligned with the course schedule and cannot be postponed to subsequent semesters.
Terms and Conditions of Participation
Participation in the placement test administered by Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences during the first or second week of classes is a prerequisite for admission to Level 3 of the “Erfolgreich Starten” program. The placement test is not the same as the orientation test used in the admissions process.
Based on the test results, the selection committee for the respective degree program may issue a recommendation for participation. If not all spots have been filled, students may also apply to participate in the split semester without a letter of recommendation.
