About the endowed professorship

The endowed professorship for cycling at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, held by Prof. Dr. Claudia Hille since the summer semester 2024, examines cycling primarily from a social science perspective. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport with a budget of around 1.7 million euros until August 2027 and is currently comprised of a team of four academic staff members.

The team provides teaching on the specialization module ‚Cycling‘ in the Bachelor’s programme ‚Transport Management (B.Sc.)‘ and the Master’s programme ‚Mobility Management (M.Sc.)‘. Furthermore, it also teaches the basics of sustainable mobility as part of other modules. The teaching approach is guided by the principle of ‚active teaching for active mobility‘, incorporating regular excursions by bicycle or on foot.

In addition to teaching and research activities, key areas of activity include the transfer of research work to society, supporting the socio-ecological transformation in society by communicative measures.

Should you wish to learn more about the work of the professorship, you can download the annual report (in German) for the summer semester 2024 and the winter semester 2024/25 here.

Research areas

Research conducted at the endowed professorship addresses a range of contemporary subjects within the domain of cycling research.

The primary foci encompass:

  • the relationship between social participation, mobility and mobility justice
  • factors influencing cycling culture
  • the potential and requirements of cargo bikes
  • gender, income and intersectionality in relation to cycling
  • the effects of (extreme) heat on the attractiveness of cycling for transport

Ongoing research projects

  • RADSOZIAL – Guide to Bicycle Mobility and Social Inclusion (KAMO: Karlsruhe Mobility High Performance Center, from May 2026)
  • Discursive Tipping Points in the Debate Over Traffic Experiments: How Social Media Comment Sections Help Shape Urban Transformation Initiatives (In-House Research Project)
  • Road safety of cargo bikes (in-house research project)
  • Mobility justice, using the Deutschland-Ticket as an example (in-house research project)
  • MobilKULT panel study (in-house research project in collaboration with Fraunhofer ISI)
  • HITZE-RAD - Cycling in times of climate crisis: Effects of extreme heat on everyday cycling (funded by the Dr Joachim and Hanna Schmidt Foundation for Environment and Transport from September 2025)

News

  • Visit and Presentations at the “AK MoVe” Conference: On June 25–26, this year’s annual conference, “Retail and Transportation—Mobility and Accessibility,” organized by the Working Group on Mobility and Transportation (AK MoVe) and the Working Group on Retail Research of the German Geographical Society, took place at RWTH Aachen University. The HKA cycling team also traveled to the event to present their own research and exchange ideas with other researchers on current topics in social science mobility research. Laura Trost presented her dissertation project on pedelecs in rural areas during the poster walk; Anne Graf presented findings from the MobilKULT study on the acceptance of bicycle traffic policy measures; and Claudia Hille moderated the session “New Trends in Mobility Behavior.” In addition to interesting presentations, there was also plenty of time for discussion and networking. We look forward to the next annual conference in 2027!

  • Presentation of Research on Transport Poverty at the “GLEN Conference”: On June 18, 2026, Uta Burghard gave a talk titled “Measuring Transport Poverty – Methodological Challenges of a Broad Research Field” at the “International Conference on Environment and Society” (also known as the “GLEN Conference”) in Constance, Germany. The acronym GLEN stands for “German Longitudinal Environmental Study,” a Germany-wide long-term study on environmental behavior. The presentation, which she developed together with Claudia Nobis (Federal Environment Agency) and Claudia Hille, focuses on methods and methodologies for measuring transport poverty.

  • Film Night with the Pop-Up Exhibition “Cycling Cities” by Ingwar Perowanowitsch: On April 15, 2026, starting at 4:30 p.m., a pop-up exhibition featuring works by master’s students from the Bicycle Traffic specialization project took place at Amalienstraße 81–87. The exhibition featured various objects related to the theme of cycling, some of which offered interactive experiences. Following the exhibition, we screened the documentary “Cycling Cities” by Ingwar Perowanowitsch, which explores Europe’s most beautiful cycling cities. This was followed by a public discussion with the filmmaker. Up to 150 people attended the exhibition and film night.

  • Roadshow on cycling on the topic of “Too hot for cycling? Effects of extreme weather on cycling”: Claudia Hille and the team from the Endowed Chair for Cycling organized a roadshow on cycling on January 12, 2026. The event addressed the question of how extreme weather, especially intense heat, affects active mobility and what municipal measures should be taken to help cyclists adapt to heat. After an input from Prof. Dr. Frank Wätzold (BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg) on the “Kühle Spur” project, the first cycle path adapted to climate change, and a presentation by Hendrik Engelbrecht (Planersocietät, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences) on his master's thesis entitled “Effects of heat on bicycle use,” a discussion with the speakers and the audience followed. The roadshow was held online and 112 persons took part.

  • Claudia Hille's participation and contribution to the ‘Active Mobility Forum’: On 19 November 2025, Claudia Hille took part in the City of Karlsruhe's new ‘Active Mobility Forum’ format. This format is the successor to the previous ‘Cyclists' Forum’ and aims to discuss current issues relating to active mobility and its social significance with various experts. Claudia Hille gave a presentation on accidents involving cyclists and took part in the subsequent panel discussion. Details ‘Active Mobility Forum’

  • Participation and involvement in the Municipal Cycling Conference: Claudia Hille and Uta Burghard took part in the “Fahrradkommunalkonferenz” (Municipal Cycling Conference) in Landau on 11 and 12 November 2025, organised by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the city of Landau. The Municipal Cycling Conference is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) and is considered the most important cycling conference at the municipal level. It is the central platform for those responsible for cycling in public administrations. Claudia Hille moderated Expert Forum 8: ‘Pilot projects for cycling: from trial to permanent solution’ and Uta Burghard moderated Expert Forum 1: ‘Safe cycle paths in urban areas: how to create continuous cycling networks’.
