05.05.2021: Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther, Director of the Institute of the German Economy in Cologne will speak on the topic: "Austerity or Investment Offensive? Entrepreneurial and governmental options for action after the corona crisis in Germany and Europe."

April 22, 2021

On Wednesday, May 5, 2021, the Rectorate of Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Economics invite from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. within the Europe Week 2021 to the public web lecture "Austerity or investment offensive? Entrepreneurial and governmental options for action after the corona crisis in Germany and Europe" by Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther, Director of the Institute of the German Economy in Cologne.

Managing the corona crisis and its economic and social consequences poses major challenges for Germany and Europe. Many wonder whether the sharp rise in government debt will possibly lead to a surge in inflation. Others fear that, in the wake of the pandemic, the state and companies will no longer have sufficient financial resources to devote to important tasks for the future, such as combating climate change, protecting the environment and shaping digitalization.

The speaker will address the question of whether public spending will necessarily have to be cut back after the crisis in order to reduce debt, or whether this is not sensible and necessary in view of the low interest rates. Current studies on the structure and scope of investment needs in Germany will also be discussed.

Other questions that arise in this context are:

  • In what way can the state and companies use public and private investment to bring about an innovative linkage of the future fields of mobility, wind and solar energy, green hydrogen, circular economy and other economic sectors?
  • What can the Next Generation EU program do to make areas such as transport, energy production and manufacturing in Europe future-proof?
  • Would multisectoral public-private collaborations involving business, academia, government and civil society be able to make contributions to the modernization of the economy?
  • Should Europe take the U.S. as a model, where President Biden has proposed an infrastructure package worth over $2 trillion? How should such massive government spending be sensibly financed?

The link to the event will be posted here in due time.
