SmartMMI

How do I get personal info about my train connection?

Personalized route planning on the train - on the smartphone and directly on the window of the train. Sounds good, but how does it work?

What is SmartMMI?

Contact: Waldemar Titov M.Sc.

Every day, public transport takes many passengers to a wide variety of destinations - both in urban and rural areas. In order to develop public transport (PT) towards more Mobility Experience, the SmartMMI project focuses on improving the provision of information to passengers along their mobility chain. Both in the event of disruptions, schedule changes, tourist destinations or services available along the route, passengers want to be informed according to the situation. As part of the SmartMMI project, funded in the mFund research initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, five project partners from industry and research are developing new technologies from data acquisition and data integration to data visualization. The project is focusing on researching and testing the context-sensitive provision of mobility data on specially developed intelligent transparent display panels that can be installed in public transport vehicles and at stops, in conjunction with applications on passengers' mobile devices.

Passengers are informed via SmartWindow and App according to the situation

The project partners are developing new technologies for the collection and integration of various data from a wide range of data sources. In doing so, the consortium is focusing on the use of Big Data and Smart Data technologies and the integration of specific public transport data based on the latest standards with Open Data and third-party data. The data is semantically enhanced to enable intelligent integration and, above all, selection of the relevant data. Contextual information that describes the current situation of the passengers also serves this purpose, thereby enabling the system to select data tailored to the situation and to prepare it in a way that is appropriate for the user and the situation. For example, sensitive data is displayed on the user's smartphone in a suitable format, while general, supplementary information is displayed on the transparent smart window of the vehicle, making use of the larger area for more detail. Discretely used color concepts can then be used, for example, to make the connection for a passenger between his or her personal route and the more general information about the route.

The project will develop semantic connectors that optimally link public transport data with other data relevant along the travel chain. Prototypes of an ambient intelligent travel information system will be researched and developed, which will support passengers during their journey in public transport in the best possible way in every situation and thus can significantly increase the attractiveness of public transport as an ecological, time-saving and sensible alternative to automobile transport

SmartMMI Leaflet: Analysis results

This document presents the results of the analysis phase in the mFund cooperation project SmartMMI - Model- and Context-based Mobility Information on Smart Public Displays and Mobile Devices in Public Transport. This publication serves as a basis for further work in the project and as a reference both for follow-up projects and for potential projects with similar issues. During the analysis phase, personas and scenarios were developed and used to identify use cases. The results of these steps are described in this document. For the persona, windows were obstructed. Results from the project IP-KOM-ÖV were taken as a basis. We hope to achieve similar synergy with the results presented here.
