Experts show online successful examples from their country

April 20, 2023

On Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 17:00-19:00 , the workgroup "Climate Positive Campus" at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA) invites you to join via Zoom https://h-ka-de.zoom.us/j/68746332034 the online conference "Costa Rica and its path for decarbonizing its economy", held by experts in the country. The meeting will be in English.

After the COVID pandemic, world economies faced many challenges. Furthermore, in the European Union, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia brought about an energy crisis. After these two major events, Germany in particular is facing a completely new scenario of economic reorientation. Nowadays, Germany should not just change its energy matrix but also decarbonize its economy by introducing strict environmental measures. At the same time, Germany's place in the global economy should be maintained. All these changes are happening arbitrarily and at a rapid pace. As a result, many people feel uncertainty.

Contrary to what most people think, decarbonizing the economy can bring major advantages. Against this background, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences presents Costa Rica as a best practice study case. Given its long-term environmental policies, Costa Rica has not been substantially affected neither by the pandemic, nor by rising energy prices. Costa Rica's example shows that a green approach can be exactly the right one. For this reason, experts from Costa Rica will present some examples on how it has decarbonized its economy. Get inspired by

  • how Costa Rica has managed to achieve an energy mix of 99% sustainable energy.
  • how Costa Rica has managed to transform its economy in a long-term, sustainable manner and
  • at the same time achieve a high level of environmental protection and preservation of high biodiversity.
  • how to interconnect different environmental strategies.
  • how Costa Rica became the world's largest pineapple exporter, and
  • at the same time ranked 23rd among emerging countries in the World Happiness Report 2023, making it one of the happiest countries in the world.

For the 2-hour mini-conference we will welcome relevant experts from Costa Rica's Ministry of Environment, the energy sector and agribusiness, who will share with participants how an entire country has made its way to decarbonization with a complex environmental strategy.
