The European Commission has selected the “Next INGENIUM” proposal under the “Erasmus+ European Universities” call. As a result, the European University Alliance INGENIUM will receive further Erasmus+ funding of approximately €7.2 million until December 2028. The funding decision marks an important step in the alliance’s development: after the first years of building common structures and strengthening cooperation, INGENIUM will now focus on deeper institutional integration among its ten member universities. “Next INGENIUM” builds on the foundations established by the alliance since its creation. These include joint governance structures, educational frameworks, and shared policies in areas such as sustainability, inclusion, multilingualism, health, and wellbeing. During the upcoming funding period, these elements will become even more embedded in the everyday life of the participating universities.
An important step towards a European University
The new funding phase comes at a time when INGENIUM has already achieved key milestones. The alliance has launched its first accredited joint master’s programme, developed twelve pathway programmes, and is working towards establishing its own legal entity based on a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC). By 2035, INGENIUM aims to operate as a joint European University with ten campuses. To achieve this goal, the alliance will develop shared academic processes, expanded mobility opportunities, joint qualifications, and sustainable structures that will continue beyond individual funding periods.
From cooperation towards a shared educational structure
In the next phase, INGENIUM will focus on four key areas: institutional transformation and governance, education and teaching, external engagement, and communication and advocacy. In the field of education, the alliance will further expand joint programmes, develop flexible pathways, and strengthen the connection between research and teaching. The INGENIUM Staff Academy will play a central role in supporting academic staff from partner universities in the joint development of innovative educational offers. Another priority is strengthening European mobility. Through a shared Mobility Charter and a central hub, international experiences will become a more integral part of students’ education. At the same time, INGENIUM will continue to expand cooperation with regional partners, including businesses, public authorities, and civil society organisations, to align educational offers with future skills needs.
A shared vision for 2035
In February 2026, the rectors and presidents of the ten member universities adopted a revised Mission Statement for INGENIUM. It defines the alliance’s identity as an “Alliance of Diversity” and reaffirms its commitment to deep institutional transformation. By 2035, INGENIUM aims to become a fully integrated European University with ten campuses across the European Union, recognised for the quality, inclusiveness, and relevance of its education, as well as for its contribution to European competitiveness, social cohesion, and the further development of European higher education.
