Borderless E-Mobility – A Federated Charging Park for Sustainable Freight Transport in the Upper Rhine

The Institute for Data-centric Software Systems (IDSS) at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences acts as the lead partner of the Interreg Upper Rhine project eTruckCharge, coordinating the collaboration of 16 partners from Germany, France and Switzerland.

The project's goal is to conceptualize a cross-border, cross-company "federated charging park" for electric trucks in the Upper Rhine region: charging capacity that already exists today at commercial sites — logistics centres, warehouses, vehicle depots, industrial parks — is to be opened up and made bookable for business partners and other users through an IT system developed within the project. This will allow haulers to pre-reserve charging capacity along their routes and plan cross-border tours safely and reliably. In addition to coordinating the project, IDSS contributes its expertise in distributed software systems and e-mobility: the institute is developing the software for managing the federated charging park, enabling companies to share their charging capacity across company boundaries in a controlled way. In addition, IDSS is working on digital twins for real-time representation of the charging infrastructure, as well as on federated forecasting methods that predict occupancy, arrival/departure times and load peaks without needing to centrally pool training data. eTruckCharge (project Ref.: B1-8) is co-financed under the Interreg Upper Rhine programme through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union.
