Europe Week 2024

Guest lecture by Jean Asselborn

“Europe at a turning point: Challenges, opportunities, and potential of the project Europe”

Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Europe and the European Union (EU) play a key role in shaping global events in politics, business, and culture. The EU represents values such as democracy, human rights, and economic cooperation. It promotes integration and secures peace on a continent formerly riven by conflict by means of a common internal market and a single currency.

Despite this achievements, the EU faces challenges ranging from geopolitical tensions to questions of sovereignty and solidarity. The discussion at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences will offer the opportunity to scrutinize current developments. The event will focus on the future of the EU, its international role, and how to overcome global crises.

The speaker, Jean Asselborn, was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg for almost twenty years. He is going to talk about the importance of Europe and outline ways to further promote European unification to create a sustainable, prosperous, and peaceful future. Challenges in the context of trade relations, technological competition, and geopolitical alignment between Europe, China, and the USA will also be analyzed. The following questions arise in this context:

  • "Given the challenges in trade relations between Europe, China and the US, what approaches is the EU taking to protect its economic independence while promoting open markets?"
  • "To what extent can young people actively contribute to promoting European unification and what role do education and intercultural exchange play in this?"
  • "How can Europe strengthen its role as an advocate of peace and stability in the world in the face of geopolitical tensions and growing conflicts?"
  • "What is the position of Europe on the two non-political challenges of our time? The war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East?"
  • "Which measures could the European Union actually take to strengthen its resilience to global crises and specific migration issues?"
  • "Given the challenges in trade relations between Europe, China, and the USA: What approaches is the EU taking to protect its economic independence while promoting open markets?"
  • "To what extent can young people actively contribute to promoting European unification, and what role do education and intercultural exchange play in this?"
