Ecosail Karlsruhe is an interdisciplinary student project dedicated to the development of sustainable sailing boats that has been running since 2017. Each year, the project is carried out by around 50 students from various faculties. Over the course of two semesters, the participants work together in small groups and as a larger team to achieve a common goal: the development of an innovative and sustainable sailing boat. The participants work on a variety of tasks, including development, design, simulation, calculation, production, purchasing and marketing. Students put their theoretical knowledge into practice, gain valuable experience and master exciting challenges.
The ecosail Karlsruhe team takes part in international competitions such as the 1001VELAcup and the SuMoth Challenge . The focus here is on the practical application of engineering knowledge, the use of sustainable materials and the use of innovative technologies such as hydrofoil technology. This cutting-edge technology makes it possible to minimize water resistance while maximizing the performance of the boats.
The project not only provides the opportunity to enhance technical and organizational expertise through independent work in a real-world environment but also facilitates valuable networking for future career prospects.
In recent years, the team has achieved numerous successes, including the special award for innovation at the 1001VELAcup. This recognition highlights their passion and dedication to pushing the boundaries of sustainable sailing through groundbreaking innovations.
The team is currently in a critical phase of developing and manufacturing its first foiling boat. This boat, which is based on hydrofoil technology, will compete in the SuMoth Challenge on Lake Garda for the first time in summer 2025.
