The Institute for Intelligent Interaction and Immersive Experience (IIIX) is delighted to be able to bring another student project to the public: From June 2 to 30, 2026, the interactive installation "Fake it till you make it" can be seen in the pop-up lab "Heute studiert Karlsruhe" in Karlsruhe's city center.

The pop-up lab is organized by the City of Karlsruhe's Science Office and will transform the former Hallhuber space at Kaiserstraße 145 into an open space for science, art and exchange in June. Click here for the event homepage

The installation "Fake it till you make it" was created at IIIX as part of the research project MuMaSens - Mündigkeit statt Manipulation. It was developed by students at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences: Fabian Baege, Sara Tettmann, Jan Ueberacker and Lieselotte Winter. The installation was exhibited for the first time at the symposium "The Fabrication of Truth" at the ZKM. Now it is being made available to the public again - as a playful contribution to science communication on the subject of fake news and digital opinion-forming.

In the interactive installation, players take on the role of a social media manager who works for an influential tech mogul. The aim of the game is to influence public opinion in the company's favor: Players comment on posts, share news, reinforce certain narratives and actively generate fake news. This makes it possible to experience how disinformation can be strategically generated, emotionally charged and algorithmically amplified, and how easily digital opinion can be manipulated.

The IIIX is delighted to have the opportunity to make this student work accessible to a wide audience as part of "Heute studiert Karlsruhe" and thus bring research on media literacy, disinformation and digital responsibility to the heart of the city. Anyone interested is cordially invited to visit the pop-up lab and try out "Fake it till you make it" for themselves. Admission is free.
