In October 2026, a delegation from partner university National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) visited Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA). The group consisted of three professors, including Prof. Ying-Jung Yeh, Vice President for International Affairs, as well as 22 students. The visit to Karlsruhe was part of a trip to several university campuses in Germany, including Stuttgart and Esslingen. The focus was on professional exchange and opportunities for future cooperation.
Reception and a tour of the laboratories
To kick off the visit, Prof. Dr. Rainer Neumann, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Teaching, and Lifelong Learning, and Silke Neureuther, Interim Director of the International Office, welcomed the guests in the Senate Chamber and gave an introductory presentation of the HKA. Afterward, Prof. Dr. Jens Denecke (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering & Mechatronics) and Prof. Dr. Philipp Nenninger (Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Information Technology) provided insights into the work of their faculties during guided tours of the respective laboratories.
Dialog at the Faculty of Computer Science & Business Information Systems
After a tour of the campus and a shared lunch in the student canteen, the delegation visited the Faculty of Computer Science & Business Information Systems (IWI). Prof. Dr. Jannik Strötgen presented current topics in Artificial Intelligence; Prof. Dr. Matthias Wölfel gave a tour of the iXperience Lab. This was followed by Prof. Dr. Philipp Nenninger, Prof. Franz Nees, and Prof. Dr. Andrea Wirth informing about HKA’s international study options, including semesters abroad and double degree programs. During a joint dinner at Lehners Wirtshaus, students and faculty continued their discussions. The guests from Taiwan took the opportunity to talk to double degree students, both from Germany and from Taiwan, about their studies and everyday life in Karlsruhe.
Prospects for further cooperation
Representatives from both Universities discussed ways to further develop collaboration in teaching and research. They considered in particular double degree programs, joint international events, and faculty exchanges. “The double degree programs with Taiwan and France are a central element of internationalization,” emphasized Prof. Franz Nees, Dean of the IWI Faculty. “They strengthen long-term partnerships with both countries in teaching and research, bring Taiwanese and French students to the Faculty, and increase its international visibility and appeal.”
International double degree programs allow students to earn a degree from an international partner university in addition to the degree from their home university. This includes a study abroad period based on a study plan agreed upon between the Universities. The Faculty of Computer Science & Business Information Systems has been offering two double master’s programs in collaboration with partner universities in Taiwan and France since 2023. More than 44 students have participated in these programs so far.
